Q
Does it matter how deep I plant bulbs?
• Do different bulbs need different depths?
Yes, the depth matters. Planting too shallow risks frost heave and
winter damage; too deep forces bulbs to expend excessive energy
to reach the surface. A rule of thumb for most fall-planted bulbs is
to plant in a hole that is three times deeper than the height of the
bulb, and packages nearly always state the proper depth. If you
combine bulbs,

, to create a mixed planting, you still need
to plant each type at its proper depth. In spring or fall, you may
overplant bulbs with hardy annuals, such as pansies, or even with
perennials, such as daylilies, which will disguise fading bulb
foliage in early summer. C5)
